Mulled Wine (Glühwein)

Ingredients

  • 750ml red wine
  • 60ml brandy
  • Orange slices
  • Cloves, cinnamon, star anise
  • Sugar or honey to taste

Method

  1. Combine ingredients: In a large saucepan, pour in the red wine. Add orange slices, 3–5 whole cloves, 1–2 cinnamon sticks, and 1–2 star anise.
  2. Sweeten: Stir in sugar or honey to taste (start with 2–3 tablespoons and adjust as needed).
  3. Heat gently: Warm the mixture over low to medium heat. Do not let it boil — just bring it to a gentle simmer.
  4. Simmer & infuse: Let it simmer for 15–20 minutes, allowing the spices to infuse into the wine. Stir occasionally.
  5. Add brandy: Remove from heat and stir in the brandy.
  6. Serve: Strain into mugs or heatproof glasses, garnish with a fresh orange slice or a cinnamon stick if desired, and serve warm.
